Short Tutorial on Camera System Live View and Playback
What prompted you to use a multi-viewer instead of a matrix? I’m trying to figure this setup out for my basement and am having trouble planning it all out. Thanks!
Matrix is different than a multiviewer. Most displays in your home are made up of just 1 TV and therefore only able to display one source at a time. A multiviewer is 1 source but can cram multiple sources into its single HDMI output giving you a split screen on a display which is only capable of displaying 1 HDMI source at a time. I save several TVs around the house and I wanted to see the split screen effect on any TV in the house so I used the multiviewer to do that. A matrix is a generic term but it involves combining multiple inputs with multiple outputs. For example, you could have a 4x4 matrix which is four sources and four displays. Any of the four sources can go to any of the four displays. I actually have in my house. A. 16x16 HDMI matrix. Amongst my 16 sources one of them is my multiviewer so I can route my multiviewer to any of the outputs. The reason I don't use it on my video wall displays individually is I used off the shelf TVs. When you do this you have to turn the top TVs upside down in order for them to fit together properly. The result is that the top two TVs obviously have inverted images. If I were to send my matrix individually to each of those TVs, all of those sources would be inverted. It's much easier to instead use a video wall controller so that your video wall instead just looks like one normal single source display instead of four TVs. It may seem like an unnecessary edition of equipment, but it is the most cost-effective way. Believe it or not.
What is your setup for sound? I want to use external audio (soundbar or two speaker system). Did you connect the video wall controller to the external sound? Does the multi-viewer allow you to change which of the four sources you are listening to?
@@mattgillim3294 The multiviewer audio output will switch between whatever source you want to listen to. There is an audio cycle button on the remote.
Thank you for some much needed clarity on the types of controllers. I did a 3×3 42" bezel less wall 2 years back. And it came out awesome problem was i was ignorent with using it as a single/multi display wall. And realized that the controller i bought only made one huge image. And just delt with it.. fast forward to today stubled accoss your video gem here and you clarified what i needed to do thank you....
Rotate upside down the top tvs of a video wall to eliminate the thicker black line
Yup I covered that at 3:45 but you are right on.
I drop hydraulic fluid on mine and I’m trying to figure out how to get it out. Do I need to use some type of degreaser and then a pressure washer or what?
Anytime I get something nasty on mine I just hit it with the pressure washer and heavy soap/degreaser. I've even used the paid pressure washers where one of the options is soap in the pressure washer stream. Then just rinse it out thoroughly. I never get all the soap out. Seems like it sticks in the fibers pretty well but I just let it dry and keep on using the bed.
EASY question. I have a non-operational fireplace in my living room that has not been used in several decades. Can I safely install a flat screen above it?
Sure, nothing wrong with that. Running cable still might be difficult although you do have more options if the flue isn't operational and you can run cable through it. There is no reason you couldn't mount on a decommissioned fireplace through.
Theres nothing simpler? Nothing were i can plug in my Nintendo switch and Blu-ray player so i can watch a movie while playing Minecraft?
The simplest way is to get a multiviewer. There are certain TV's that have some of that functionality built into them. Samsung for example has a feature called Multi View and it is available on some of there Q series TV's . I am unsure of all the limitations but you can do a side by side image of 2 sources on Samsung TV's if they have the multi view feature.
It doesn't get much simpler than this. If you can hang a lcd TV on the wall and plug in a CD player then you have all but mastered the art of this type of video wall.
any software to do that with a PC? I want to get rid of the Chrome taskbars -completely-.
I am sure that software exists to divide up a PC screen but I'm not familiar with any of them. Let me know what you find.
Superb detailed install instruction Ed. Would you consider providing opinion via photos shared with a property out of state?

Great overview. What is the best way to display 4 different channels/sources/ sports using a multi viewer on a single tv if they are coming from different streaming apps? Assume all 4 inputs would need to be connected to an internet device such as 4 x fire sticks? Also I assume you can’t use the tvs inbuilt apps as 1 of the 4 displays within 4 screen multi viewer..?
You are spot on. Using the TV's built in apps would take you away from the multiviwer input and leave you with just one big screen. Use 4 streaming media players like you said. Helpful tip is to use players that utilize rf or Bluetooth remotes so you can just label the remotes 1-4 and always be able to control which screen you want without accidentally controlling one of the others. Most media players use these types of remotes. Quick test is if it has a built in mic on the remote for voice control. Dead giveaway it's Bluetooth with that feature
Hello. Do you have any you highly suggest? In your notes, you said you don’t necessarily recommend any of them
I currently use this multiviewer www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08KFNPTS7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 It has worked out pretty well but it is limited to a 4k 30Hz output. Other than that it has worked out. My video wall controller www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08K4Z4KSD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I won't recommend as it has a pretty significant limitation and I don't want anyone else running into the problem. This video wall controller will not splice if your using 4k. Again if you set the resolution to 4k then you can't adjust the individual monitors via "splicing" The splicing feature is disabled when you run it in 4k. This is really irritating and had I know this I would not have purchased it.
Are you still doing things like this? I’m in Dallas and have this exact situation.
Yup, get requests pretty regularly. We do residential and commercial low voltage work of all kinds www.av-guy.com
Here’s a ? what’s the biggest size tv you’ve put over a fireplace???
I've put several 85s over fireplaces. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I put one of those 98 inch Samsung's up
Will all the speakers of each tv be active at the same time?
No, you can select which source you want to hear.
Do they daisy chain power or are they all plugged in?
All go back to a surge protector.
Are you In Dallas area?
yes
How do you turn them all at the same time
I use a control system. Each TV is individually controlled and I turn them all on with one button press.
Can you run a multiviewer through a video wall controller?
absolutely controller will take any compatible HDMI input signal.
@EdwinBonneau I was thinking of buying the j tech matrix. Also was thinking if I hooked up controller to multi viewer all the inputs would go to either or So they wouldn't work simultaneously
Im confused on this subject if you can shed some light, I want to do trucking sim. With 3 tvs “not monitors” some videos say MST HUB some say VIDEO WALL CONTROLLER whats the difference??? Also Can you do this with just an HDMI SPLITTER ? Output to 3 monitors ??? Also what if the machine accept 1.4 and the mst is 1.2 will u run it to issues or you have to match it ???
No real difference between a monitor or TV when it comes to your trucking sim. I have a flight simulator and use 3 - 55" TVs. You will need a computer that has 3 video outputs. Get a desktop PC and add a dedicated video card. Almost all of the dedicated video cards have at least 3 outputs. With the dedicated outputs you can tell your computer that you have 3 dedicated screens and you want the image spanned/extended across them.
Are you not concerned about the temp of the attic during summer? Does the spray foam keep the attic cool enough during the summer to not worry about equipment overheating?
That attic only hits 80 in the summer. Foam is great for that.
Thank you sir.
I found your video because my new-ish tv broke. I think it’s because of the fireplace but literally that’s the only place to put the TV in this house. That’s how it’s designed. So we will need to rewire everything to move it and it can’t be in the family room because there’s no flat walls big enough except over the fireplace. The TV is less than 2 years old and we moved into this house 7 months ago. Once summer was over we had to use the fireplace just to keep the house comfortable. Now we’ve got a new furnace but the screen went out on the TV. It’s like when you need to replace the bulb on those old huge TVs (maybe that’s still how it works but probably not.) but I do know that’s not it because every once in awhile when we try to get the TV working it will light up for 1/2 a second then black. We can hear the TV and my kids even clicked around in the darkness and listened to a show once. TV has been out 3 days and I think it’s been cooked by the fireplace. Sad day!
I have seen lots of TV's die in a lot of different ways. It's not uncommon for the TV screen to fail (usually a backlight issue) and for the sound to still work. I've been doing this kind of work since 2004 and I can't say I have seen a greater failure rate on TV's over a fireplace vs TV's on a regular wall. Honestly the biggest failure rate is after moving a TV from one location to another, power surges and lightning. Those instances I can with a great deal of confidence say cause a higher rate of failure on electronics. Such a bummer that your TV has broken. It's so frustrating to pay good money for a TV only to have it crap out.
Why don’t people use borderless tvs when doing tv walls. How annoying to have black bezels all over when watching tv or movies or playing games.. this makes 0 fucking sense lol.. 65” borderless tvs are like $540 on Black Friday lol..
Take a closer look at those borderless TVs. My TVs are advertised borderless as well believe it or not. There is no real discernable edge/border/bezel to the TV s but that's because they laminate the last protective layer of the screen over the bezel. As soon as the TV is turned on you see where the actual display panel ends and the border begins. You can get very thin bezel displays but they are extremely pricey. Try a Google search for video wall displays.
I've been in the home tech business for 24 years and I just learned something new. I doubt I will ever attempt this just because I would have to charge so much that nobody would want to pay for it. I would love to see the finished product with the box installed and the brick back in place.
You would be surprised at what people will pay for. I do not like doing the hard installs and my prices reflect it because of the extra labor and risk involved but I get calls often and accepted proposals because it is a service that many people want and are willing to pay for it it's done correctly. Don't be afraid to quote it (assuming you feel confident enough to do the install). I think you would be surprised at customers responses.
Beautifully done man. Much appreciated.
I'm planning on a pellet stove. I'm guessing that would be fine too?
Stoves can be hit or miss. Often they emit heat straight up the wall instead of projecting it into the room with passive ventilation like an open fireplace. I would check the temps with it running or get a good mantle to redirect that heat.
Would you be able to connect multiple projectors to the video wall controller?
Yes
Hey did you take off bezels or did something, I can't see them at all when you were switching modes. Also could you share models of TVs. I can't see grip at all, how?
This is just a single tv. Likely a 55 or 60 inch based on the size of it and him next to it. He’s probably just using 1 tv to showcase the hdmi controller.
"can't get too big of a screen.." agreed!
Yeah this is why I'm considering using a different wall to mount my TV
Yeah I totally understand. It can be a real beating. Just did one this week and have another one to install in 2 weeks.
Great video. Thanks.
I’ve been researching this for a while. Thanks for your input. My goal is to merge 4 x 4K 85 inch TVs into one huge picture. Would the 4 screen display in 8 k or 4 k. My input would be Apple TV or Roku I don’t need to split since each tv is connected to RUclips tv. I think I just need a multiviewer. Problem 2 when TVs are running separate. How do I separate each tv with corresponding remote. Ie I don’t want all TVs to change volume or channels when I select one of the 4 Samsung remotes.
Ah the inherent challenges needed to overcome with video walls. If you have a video wall controller that can output 8k then yes you will see an 8k image. I can tell you right now that the 8k controller is likely way to expensive for most setups. A decent 4k output is realistically the best you're going to achieve. You will need to get TV's that use Bluetooth/RF remotes so that they can be assigned to each display and then label the remotes. I use a fancy control system and I control all my displays via IP or discrete IR through individual emitters on each display. Video walls are complicated setups and require a good knowledge of electronics to navigate effectively. You will have to have a video wall controller in order to make 4 separate TVs into 1 TV. No way around it unless you purchase a display that is designed to be a video wall display and in that case it will have the appropriate hardware built into it. These TVs are not available at Best Buy or any other box store.
NO. A TV over a fireplace screams “The people who live here have no taste at all”.
My house as you are likely already aware of. I'll let you be the authority on "taste"' as I have never claimed to have any! Lot of people do it, sometimes it's the only logical choice, sometimes it's a preference.
Dude. Unnecessary comment.
@@EdwinBonneau sorry, that was rude. Still, the space over a fireplace is a really bad place for TV’s, both aesthetically and practically. The heat from the fireplace is bad for the TV, the angle for watching it is bad for your neck, and the space is more suited for a painting, portrait, or wall sculpture.
Does this fit over linex? My beds starting to show some surface rust spots and I was considering doing linex for rust protection and then have the bed rug install on top.
I've not tried over a bedliner. Fitment likely will not be a problem but getting it to adhere to the liner might be a problem.
Question? We need to flip the tv because of the power buttons are on the bottom, but when I use the codes mute+182+power when the option appears and I push enter there is no MRT option. What do I do?
You must get a video wall controller to flip those displays then. Unfortunately most consumer displays wont allow you to get into the service menu and "flip" the image. Commercial or video wall displays are designed with this feature embedded in the display but your TVs from the big box stores usually will not support that feature. Even if you find an article that claims to know how to get into the service menu, the manufactures often change firmware to eliminate the option on future sets. For this reason your best bet is to purchase a video wall controller which will allow you to invert/flip the image on the displays that you need to without the need to get into the service menu on the TV itself. It's one of the main features of a video wall controller. If you have a commercial display and cant get into the appropriate menu you will need to check with the manufacturer through their support team.
What about a LED video wall
LED walls are an amazing solution and perfect for commercial use. Extremally bright and their modular design makes them easy to deploy and arrange in whatever design the project calls for. They are very expensive and the only real use I have seen of them in residential space is large exterior displays but several "residential" systems exist. Sony, Samsung and LG I know have them. They just run around 90k to get into one!
Hello, and thank you for your time. I am trying to replace my projector with four 65-inch 4k tv's. I want to use it for movies xbox and Sunday football on multiple screens, and that's where I get lost between muti switches and controllers. Again, I just want to set up a 2x2. Xbox and cable box. Thank you to any and all information. Thanks.
A Video Wall Controller makes 4 TV's into 1 usable screen. This has to happen first when combining multiple TV's together. After you have the 4 TV's acting as 1 screen with the Video Wall Controller then you need a multiviewer to split up sources (xbox, cable box etc..) across the big screen. You can skip the controller step if you use a projector instead for your big screen. But if you really want to do 4 TVs then you MUST have a video wall controller. The Video Wall (multiple TV's together) is a more complex setup and will require more patience and maintenance.
what is the tv models that your using? because this is the best one i have ever seen... i dont even see the bezels in the middle
Haha, yup no bezels on that TV behind me. It is just a regular old 65"TV. My multiviewer is connected to that TV. I was just showcasing the multiviewer capability from the TV behind me. Looking back on the video now it would have been helpful If I would have sat in front of my video wall for some of the description. Lots of people mix up multivierers for video walls.
Did u turn the top 2 tvs upside down or bottom two tvs
I flipped the top two. Generally that'd your only play. It's the bottom of the TVs that is usually irregular so you have to yup the bottom of the displays on the edge of your video wall.
Excellent
So each video is 1080p even though the source is maybe 4k?
In my setup each of my video wall monitors is 1/4th of the 4k resolution. Combined as one display they come out to a single 4k display. Now there are a lot of nuances here. Each display has a native 4k resolution so each individual monitor is upscaling its incoming resolution to fill the entire 4k panel. In short my video wall controller is capable of accepting 4k signals and outputting a 4k signal but spread across 4 displays. Hope that answers your question.
@@EdwinBonneau gotcha, but with the multi viewer will convert a 4k to something lower though?
@@BPTtech every multiviewer is different. Some accept 4k signals and only output 1080p some will do 4k. Some accept 8k signals and output the same....all it takes is $ and you can get just about anything you want. 1080 input 1080p output $. 4k input 4k output $$$. 8k input 8k output $$$$$$$$
@@EdwinBonneau gotcha
Fantastic - thanks! How would you go about adding touch screen capability to the setup?
Touch screen for the video wall or a touch screen controller to manage it?
Yes to both@@EdwinBonneau
I use URC Total Control for my control setup. It requires a manufacturers certification to obtain the programming and ability to purchase the equipment. I use wand, style remotes as well as their mobile app for control of the system. To make the entire 110" screen touch screen, that could prove much more difficult. I have seen some virtual touch screen options that might give you that kind of control. prodisplay.com/touch-screens/interactive-overlays/infrared-touch-overlay/@@user-kd7hy9xq2j
Great content Sir, so for your setup you have both. the video wall and multi viewer?
That is correct
I’m getting g ready to setup my own video wall at home. Thanks for this, really helped me on getting started, but I have a question… i want to keep my surround sound, what’s the best way have a video wall with a multiviewer and AV receiver??
Plug the multiviewer into the AVR then the monitor out from the AVR goes into the video wall controller.@@markwheat9689
I want to mount a 95lb tv over a 2” thick faux stone fireplace. My question is can I just use stone anchors without finding and drilling into the stud. Can the 2” stones and the right type of bolts hold the weight of the tv and the mount
I can't say without a doubt that it will be fine. It all depends on how that wall was built. There are some walls I have mounted on that I wouldn't risk it. Most of the time you can though. If you are mounting with a standard tilting or fixed wall mount then likely you will be ok. If you are using an articulating mount you need to carefully consider what's going on with the wall. Once I mount a mount on the wall I usually try to do a "structural" test by hanging on it. I weigh far more than my TV's so if I can hang and bounce a bit without the mount moving then I know it's good. Bottom line is, more than likely you will be fine with a standard mount.
HI new here . can i make two 50inch tvs into one screen as in 1 image across the 2 tvs any advice anyone ...
So I wanted to see how he did the tv’s and got nothing thanks
How did you managed the Cabling?
Pre-Wired this 165' back to the equipment rack. Had to go up to the vaulted ceiling 26' and fur out the ridge beam just to get the cables into an attic. It was a pain. Also ran conduit so I wouldn't be stuck.
Hi so I was thinking of doing a 12 tv video wall and was just trying to figure out what I would need to get that to work. I have found a controller that supports 3x4 would I need multiple multiviewers to have multiple outputs for the 12 tvs?
So you are getting pretty involved with that one. You are going to want a really nice multiviewer/controller. Short answer is yes you can chain several cheaper multiviewers together to create pretty complex source arrays (chopping up of the entire screen). You might not want to do that because now your dealing with lots of extra hardware and points of failure as well as a far more complex overall setup which only the installer will fully understand and be competent in usage. I would highly recommend a single multiviewer setup which will allow all the sources to be managed from one location and then split up across the screen accordingly. There are systems that combine both the video wall features with the multiviewer features. I haven't personally done large video walls like this but look at birddog.tv/videowall-overview/ Also the type of content your putting up their will limit what hardware you need. If it's live broadcast or copy protected content you will need a system that can handle all the HDCP stuff vs an advertising based display showing just a bunch of PC based stuff.
Do you think a cpu can do a 2 tv wall? I’m leaning that way to downsize some devices. (Firesticks, Roku) chromecast). I currently run a hdmi switch with 2 outputs.
I think I understand what your asking and the answer is yes. A windows based PC can easily span a single window across 2 screens or do 2 (or more) applications on any of the screens simultaneously. This is all dependent and the type of computer your running. I am only familiar with PC but Mac can probably do the same type of thing.
Do you ever use patch panels for better wire management? Look forward to seeing the finished result
All the time. In residential installs the cables rarely if ever get moved so often I just throw a 45 on the end of them. In this job the company that did the pre-wire had them all terminated already which is a rare treat so I just used them the way they were.
Awesome video. I thought I needed one thing and was completely educated
Ditto.
